Kate's Hair - Phase II

Just wanted you to know that another decision needs to be made in regards to my hair. Not like I don't have enough to think about. Anyway . . . . . after careful reading it seems to confirm I will be losing my hair during the second week of radiation treatment. I will need to decide on cutting my hair to a shorter length so the weight of my hair shaft will not be as heavy. I am thinking this is a step in the right direction. I will try to get used to short hair for a time prior to having NO hair. My point is . . . . . I would rather my boys (including Dave) have me without hair than to not have me at all. I love them so!

Also pray for patience. I don't want to go ahead of myself until we hear from Houston on the advice given for my treatment.

Many details - - - kate

Dear Kate,
I think a short haircut would be a good thing--it will give you a lift just to go to the hairdresser, and it will help your family get ready for the change to come. You will also be beautiful bald!

Here's something I read this morning--tuck it away and use when needed!

Angry Floods

READ: Psalm 93 NIV

The Lord reigns, he is robed in majesty; the Lord is robed in majesty and is armed with strength. The world is firmly established; it cannot be moved. 2 Your throne was established long ago; you are from all eternity. 3 The seas have lifted up, O Lord, the seas have lifted up their voice; the seas have lifted up their pounding waves. 4 Mightier than the thunder of the great waters, mightier than the breakers of the sea-- the Lord on high is mighty. 5 Your statutes stand firm; holiness adorns your house for endless days, O Lord.

"Trouble comes our way, according to Psalm 93, in relentless waves that surge and pound against our souls and break upon them with furious force. “The floods have lifted up, O LORD, the floods have lifted up their voice,” and they are deafening (v.3).

Yet above the tempest we hear the psalmist’s refrain: “The LORD on high is mightier than the noise of many waters, than the mighty waves of the sea” (v.4).

Indeed, “the Lord reigns”! He is clothed with majesty and strength. He sits as King, exalted higher than the waves that rise above us, deeper than their immeasurable depths, greater than their strongest surge. The storm is in His all-powerful hands: “The world is established, so that it cannot be moved,” for His rule over it was established long ago (v.1). He rules the raging of the sea; the “wind and the sea obey Him” (Mark 4:37-41). He speaks and they are still.

The storm will not last forever. Yet, while it rages, you can cling to the Lord’s promises of love and faithfulness, for His “testimonies are very sure” (Ps. 93:5). Waves of trouble and grief may sweep over you, but you will not be swept away. He “is able to keep you from stumbling” (Jude 24). Our Father in heaven is holding your hand. —David H. Roper

When overwhelmed with problems,
When weak or tired or ill,
When storms are fierce and raging
Just hear His “Peace, be still.” —Jarvis

When adversity is ready to strike us, then God is most ready to strengthen us."

This also reminds me of an OLD Twila Paris song that has helped me through a few stormy times--"Peace, Be Still."

"There is an ocean surrounding me
Mostly the water is calm
Just enough breeze to keep me sailing
I feel safe and warm
Angry winds blow suddenly
How this world can threaten me
Then the Master speaks with sure authority

Chorus
Peace be still, Peace be still
Peace be still to the wind and the waves
Peace be still, Peace be still
Peace be still and the ocean obeys

There is an ocean inside my heart
Mostly the water is calm
Just enough breeze to keep me sailing
I feel safe and warm
Angry winds blow suddenly
I become a churning sea
Then I hear a quiet voice--He says to me

Repeat Chorus

Angry winds blow suddenly
I become a churning sea
Then I hear a quiet voice--He says to me

Repeat Chorus

Love,
Marilyn

Dear Kate,

After having long hair all my life, I cut it a couple of years ago. I LOVE having it short even though I really liked having long hair. It's been a fun change, and I'd never go back.

One thing's for sure....you're really cute, and you'll always be....hair or no hair!

Again, if you need any special hair-ware whipped up, just let me know. I love to sew.

Kate...I have had a few friends and my mom go through hairloss due to cancer treatments. They all had their hair cut quite short before they began losing it. Actually, they were advised to do so. It is easier for the person losing their hair if it doesn't come out in long clumps of strands. When it is already quite short, it is easier to cope with. You have such beautiful facial features...it WILL be okay and you will still look radiant!! If you should opt for a wig instead of wearing scarves, let me know...I know of two places that are highly recommended...I know people who have gone to both. They are usually covered by insurance also. Although, I think you look fabulous with the scarf look! Remember, winter is approaching...you have to think of warmth as well as comfort! Take care!! jen

Kate,

You have such lovely hair...is it possible for you to do the locks of love, as long as it has to be cut? (Just thinking that someone else would be delighted to be blessed with your hair!) (Personally, I always wanted to be a brunette.)

Do you have pierced ears? Because now would be a GREAT time to invest in some funky earrings!!

Let me know if I can help with the chaffeuring back and forth to treatment...even if you feel fine...a little company never hurt.

Privileged to pray for you,
Erika Byars

P.S. Laura Joback, if you are reading this: my daughter had a diaper rash that just opened up and bled, it was so bad. Total nightmare. An elderly pediatrician told me (in addition to the creams and heat) to sprinkle browned cornstarch in the diaper at each change to help absorb the moisture in the diaper. (Just spread a fine layer of cornstarch on a cookie sheet, and bake at 450 for about 18 minutes...then store in an old spice bottle.)

Dear Kate,

I agree with the previous posts that you will be a beauty no matter what hairstyle you choose. :)

(Deuteronomy 33:26 & 27)
There is no one like the God...who rides on the heavens to help you and on the clouds in his majesty. The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms."

Still praying & thinking of you often,

Larilee

Kate,
Funny but true story.
When my friends Mack and Marci Morton's son went through radiation treatment, he went in with bone straight hair and after it grew out again, it grew into this beautiful head of curly locks. He said that he came out better looking then when he went in. He had a permanant perm.
One never knows what wonderful surprises may come of this.

true, kate's hair is one of the many beautiful features that shape her image, but it is purely aesthetical. unlike samson, it is not the source of her strength, or her energy. you can cut my sister's hair but her spirit is much harder to compromise with.

hair returns. it grows. it is shaped and styled to merely compliment a personality. despite what messages herbal essence commercials sends to its viewers, shampooing your hair everyday is not always an enlightening experience. it's more of a chore, as is brushing it everyday. beautiful hair won't make you late for the marriage alter, screaming delightfully from a distant shower. it won't make heads turn, or traffic stop.

Kate - I've always had short hair until that past 3 years or so because I like the lack of fuss, but some of the people I know who've had cancer have gone for a short do as a way of kind of empowering themselves - "I'll cut my hair short before the chemo gets it." You've got boys, so you could make it kind of a guy thing - "I want to look like my boys!" Maybe it would work - although my daughter keeps begging me not to go back to my "boy cut." Hang in there - Amelia

Hey, to let you know, I'm going to find out how to donate my hair to my beautiful friend, Kate. I wonder if your friend Jen Schulte knows if the two wig places could turn my hair into a wig for you. It's settled, we're going to do this for YOU. It has nothing to do with it being "neccesary". WE want to. We both love you so much and when you're cold cause it's winter you can add my hair-wig to your many choices to accent your incredibly radiant face and Spirit:)

We love you so much
Andy and Marnie
